When disturbing or traumatizing events happen to us, the events can be locked in our nervous system with all the original senses associated with the events. When those events are stuck it can result in anxiety, panic, phobia, dissociation, numbness, insomnia, depression, and constant fear you are in danger. We often think we have moved beyond those hurts because we can reason we are past what has happened and be rational about the events; however we can still be triggered by something in the present. That trigger could be someone raising their voice or a loud noise that sends you into panic. Some situations or people might give you a sense of dread that you simply cannot explain. Our brains are complicated systems of memories that connect the here and now to those early traumas. Although your brain is unaware of the connection to your past, your body is very aware and signals to you that something is not right. Your body keeps the score. We can tell if there are memories that are troublesome to us because we have physical reactions to triggers. Sometimes the reaction is a headache, a tightness in your chest, or a pit in your stomach.

We can help you heal those memories using an evidence-based trauma treatment called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Using EMDR therapy we can process your traumatic memories so they are no longer disturbing to you and allow you to move on. You can learn more about the treatment process here.
